Pilot whale die after swallowing 80 plastic bags

In southern Thailand a small male pilot whale has died after swallowing more than 80 plastic bags.

The whale was discovered barely alive and vomited up five bags while rescuers struggled to spare to save it over four days, marine officials said.

After death examination uncovered 80 plastic bags, weighing up to 1st 3lb, in the creature's stomach.

The bags had made it impossible for the whale to eat any nutritional food, said Thon Thamrongnawasawat, a marine biologist.

"If you have 80 plastic bags in your stomach, you die," he said.

Each year at least 300 marine animals like pilot whales, sea turtles and dolphins die in Thai waters after ingesting plastic, he added.

"It's a huge problem. We use a lot of plastic."

Thailand is one of the world's top-five plastic polluters according to last year Ocean Conservancy alongside China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam.

Together these nations are responsible for more than half of the plastic that washes into the ocean every year – thought to be between eight and 13 million tonnes.

The pilot whale was found on Monday in a canal close to the border with Malaysia, Thailand's Department of Marine and Coastal Resources said on Facebook.

Rescuers had to use buoys to keep the mammal above water, while a sunshade was set up to protect it from the blasting sun. It died yesterday.

Duterte: No Building Casino in Boracay

President Duterte is against the building a casino in the island of Boracay, Philippines.

“Far from it actually. I never said building anything or even a nipa hut there,” Duterte said in a press conference in Davao City before flying to China.

“Walang plano diyang casino-casino. Tama na iyan kasi sobra na. May casino dito, casino doon,” he added.

(There is no plan to build a casino there. Stop already because they’re too much. There’s a casino here, a casino there.)

The President's announcement came as Galaxy Macau's Galaxy Entertainment Group and its local  partner, AB Leisure Exponent Inc., stated their plan of a $500-million integrated casino resort in the prominent island resort.

Duterte said Filipinos would not obtain anything from building a casino in Boracay.

“Bakit bigyan ko kayo diyan ng casino? Ano’ng makuha ng Pilipino diyan? Lahat ‘yan,” he said.
(Why would I give you a casino? What will the Filipinos get out of it? All of it.)

The President said he would likewise sign a decree to declare a state of calamity.

“Now if you are asking of a financial help, I am going to sign the proclamation of calamity. And we can make available about P2 billion of assistance but these are only for the poor Filipinos,” he said.

“I will not spend any single centavo for those inns there, hotel owners or motels. At ‘yung magagandang bahay (And for the beautiful houses), do not expect me to pay anything,” he added.
